Photograph albums, 1926,2006.

Scrapbooks, 1926, 1928, and 1932, consist mainly of good quality black and white photographs of the camp's buildings; activities of the campers, such as swimming, canoeing, dances and plays, flag raising ceremonies, playing tennis and baseball, boating, car trips, horseback riding, and a trip aboard the ferry U.S.M. Algomah, a Mackinac Island ferry; the campers in uniform, dressed for church, arriving or leaving camp; as well as wildlife, nature scenes, and local tourism spots they visited, including North Fishtail Bay, Bay City (Mich.), and the Marquette Cross. Also included are a few photographs of a U.S. Army hydroplane that landed on Douglas Lake and the pilot. A few scrapbook items, such as announcements, an August 25, 1926 Third Annual Banquet dinner menu, and a high quality printed 1928 camp booklet are included. The booklet highlights the activities, buildings, and good qualities of the camp and is illustrated with many good photographs. According to the booklet, the goals of the camp were to help develop within the campers "lessons of self-reliance, good sportsmanship, thoughtfulness, consideration of others, and unselfish cooperatiion." All three scrapbooks have leather covers with "Photographs, North Woods Camp" and the year stamped on the front cover in gilt. The 1932 scrapbook has tan leather covers, while the other two have black. Also, the binding in the 1926 v. is destroyed, so all the pages and covers are loose, unlike the other two v., which are in excellent condition. Both the 1928 and 1932 volumes include a signature page in the rear of each v. signed by the campers. The overall physical condition of the scrapbooks is excellent. The vast majority of the photographs are unidentified, except for a few portraits identified by the donor. Some photographs are identified with "Indian" nicknames of campers, or captions regarding costumed campers in skits. Also included on top of the 1926 v. are notes (3 pp.) about the history of the camp and its original owners which were transcribed by the archivist in 2006 from a 2005 conversation with the donor.

Approx. 3 cubic ft. (3 v. in 3 flat boxes) : ill.

The property for Camp North Woods was purchased in 1923 by Wilbur Bowen and Paul Sampson, who were both professors at the Normal School at Ypsilanti, now Eastern Michigan University (EMU). At the time, EMU wanted to develop a field training area for students intereted in pursuing the burgeoning camping and outdoor leisure business, although it did not have the funds to purchase the necessary property.
